First Half of Lent Term 2012
Dear Nursery and Infant Parents
I hope you all had an enjoyable and relaxing break. The Lent Term is well underway and the children and staff are enjoying being “back in the swing of it” at school.
Nursery, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 Lent Term letters are being sent concurrently.
LENT TERM CALENDAR
You will soon be emailed a copy of the Lent Term calendar.
YEAR 2 TRIP TO FOLK MUSEUM
On Thursday 2nd February, the Year 2 trip to the Folk Museum will be an all day one. Year 2 children who usually have school lunch on Thursday will need a packed lunch on this day.
BOOK WEEK 6 – 10TH FEBRUARY
Book Week takes place in the week before half term. Our theme this year is “Animals in stories”. We have a full and exciting week.
Winnie the Witch will be appearing in person, to read her new adventures to all the children.
Korky Paul, the illustrator of the ‘Winnie the Witch’ (and other) stories, will be visiting the Nursery and Infants after half term.
‘STORYTIME SURPRISE’ will take place every day, with involvement from a few Senior School children, too.
On Wednesday 8th February, the Senior, Junior and Infant children (not Nursery) will be getting together in carefully preselected cross-school groups for a ‘Buddy’ day. Lots of exciting activities, inspired by A.A.Milne’s ‘Winnie the Pooh’ stories, will take place, led by the Senior children.
On Friday 10th February, it will be the children’s chance to dress up. This year, the children should dress as an animal from a story. (They should remember the book, too, as it will make identifying who they are easier.)
We hope you will not mind paying £2 for the privilege of not wearing school uniform, to be donated to S.W.E.E.T.
Could you read/tell a story from your own country? We are very fortunate that quite a few Nursery and Infant parents come from other cultures. If you feel you would like to read or tell a story featuring an animal from your country (which of course includes England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales) to your child’s class, we would be very pleased to welcome you.
Please see your child’s teacher to discuss and arrange a day/time.
NAMED CLOTHING
We are still encountering a few problems determining ownership of jumpers etc due to articles of clothing being either unnamed, or faintly labelled (washed out biro). Please either sew nametapes into your child’s clothing, or use an indelible marker to write their names.
FUTURE IMPORTANT DATES FOR YOUR DIARY
Thursday 1st March –‘Every Child an Artist’ Art Exhibition in School Hall pm.
Friday 16th March - Our Infant and Nursery Mothers’ Day Assembly is at 2.15 pm in the School Hall. All mothers warmly expected, other family members are very welcome.
Parent Consultations are on Thursday 22nd March, 3.30 – 6.45 pm.
The Infant and Nursery staff would like to wish you, rather belatedly, a very happy, healthy and peaceful New Year.
Yours sincerely

Nursery Department Letter
11th January 2012
Dear Nursery Parents,
A very happy New Year to you all from all the staff in the Nursery. We hope that you will have a peaceful and enjoyable New Year.
On behalf of Miss Butler, Mrs Taylor, Miss Webb and myself, we would like to thank you for your kind cards and gifts at Christmas; they were much appreciated by all four of us. Christmas is a special time and we hope that you all had a very good one. We are sure the Nursery DVD provided lots of entertainment for you all; the children were truly delightful in their Christmas performance.
This term we have a new topic titled “How things work, clothes and Easter.” Each week we will plan a new set of activities based on these topics, leading all the way up to Easter. The Nursery objectives which are available on the web site, are broad and aim to accommodate all the children in our Nursery. However, each week we always endeavour to develop individual children’s needs at this very young age, based on their particular interests and progress.
There are lots of exciting things to look forward to this term which will appear on regular school newsletters throughout the term. Please be aware that the Nursery is involved in Book week, the art exhibition, science week and indeed Mothers Day and Easter celebrations. If you are ever unsure about anything going on at the school, please do not hesitate to ask one of the Nursery team.
As the weather has now turned colder it is important that your child has a named warm, navy coat with matching navy hat and mittens everyday. Please may I also remind you that the Nursery uniform requests all children wear a yellow polo shirt, not an alternative colour and blue/ black shoes at Nursery.
Finally, please can I remind you all it is very important that you are always on time to pick your child up at the end of your child’s Nursery session. Morning sessions end at 11:45 am. Sessions including lunch end at 12:30 pm. and Nursery closes at the end of the day at 3:15 pm. Please make sure you are on time for your child as it causes unnecessary concern for both your child and nursery staff if you are late.
Best wishes for a super 2012!
Jane Wilson, Angela Butler, Evelyn Taylor and Laura Webb.
Nursery Teacher and the Nursery team.
Reception Class Letter
12th January 2012
Dear Parents
Welcome back to a new term and Happy New Year to you all. This half term our focus will be ‘How things work’. This will include learning about machines in the home, space and space travel, simple electric circuits, magnets, bubbles, floating and sinking and bridges. As you can see we are in for a very busy half term! If children have any books about any of these areas, they are very welcome to bring them in to share with the other children.
Language and Literacy
We will be looking at non-fiction books connected with our theme. In addition, we will be reading fiction books which have predictable structure and patterned language. As before we will be focusing on recognising letter sounds and identifying sounds in words. We will concentrate on the following sounds each week as well as revisiting the sounds we covered last term. The children are welcome to bring in objects that correspond to these sounds, as follows: -
Week beginning 10th January – ng (as in bang)
Week beginning 16th January – th (as in thumb)
Week beginning 23rd January– ai (as in rain)
Week beginning 30th January – ee (as in see)
Week beginning 6th February – all (as in ball)
Please keep up your hard work reading with your child as often as possible, it helps their progress a great deal if they read at home. Please write in the yellow diary, and then we are aware if the book has been read.
Number Work
This term we will continue to work on numbers to 20: recognising, ordering and doing practical counting activities with these numbers. We will also be practicing writing numbers together with simple addition and subtraction with numbers up to 10. We will continue counting to 100 in ones and tens and thinking about ordering these bigger numbers. In addition, to this we will be looking again at shapes and will do some work on comparing weights; using balances and investigating which things are heavier or lighter.
Just to remind you that although we have been fortunate with the mild weather, there may be cold weather to come. Therefore children will need coats, hats and scarves (all in navy blue) in school every day please. Children also need their PE kit in school on Tuesdays and Wednesdays please.
We hope all the children have an enjoyable half term.
Yours sincerely,
Mrs Linda Holt Mrs C Zermane

Dear Parents
Welcome to the Lent term. We are looking forward to a busy and interesting term ahead with many events and activities planned.

In our Geography work, after half term, we will be looking at the capital cities of the British Isles.

PE
Please can we remind you to label all clothing, and ensure that all items of kit are in their bags each week. We will be sending the children home in their kit on a Tuesday and Wednesday. Please be sure to return their kit to their peg the following day, as we like to have it in school all week. On a Thursday please continue to send your child into school in their PE kit. Thank you.
Raincoats
Please could we also ask you to ensure that your child always has a waterproof jacket in school for our very inclement weather!
We have 2 trips, “Book Week” and a “School Science Week” coming up, as well as our Mothers’ Day Service, so it is going to be an exciting term!
Yours sincerely
Mrs Judith Forgham
