Year 6- Summer Term
7th May 2010
Dear Parents of Year 6
I hope this letter finds you all well and happy. Please find below a brief summary of what your children will be covering this term. Should you have any particular interest or knowledge you would like to share with us on these subjects please feel free to contact me.
Finally please note that the Junior School will be doing their annual tests the week of 17-21 May (these are kept low key and are nothing for the children to feel anxious about). The results of these are given to you on your child’s end of year report. Any issues over your child will not be left to the last day of term and you will be contacted beforehand to discuss any concerns where necessary.
Hopefully during your child’s final term with the Juniors they are being fully prepared for life at Senior School, part of this preparation is by having several different teachers teach them. Please note ‘MOVE UP DAY’ where your child spends the day visiting the Senior School is on 29th June.
English – Year 6 will be studying Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The books we are reading, Anne Frank’s diary and the Silver Sword, are linked to History and R.E. Spelling test will take place every Thursday. Pupils are given one week to learn them. Pupils have 20-25 minutes reading time four times a week (one of these sessions being shared reading with the Year 3). A WWII fiction book of their choice should be read. There are plenty of books to choose from in the classroom.
History – Year 6 are studying World War II. They will be visiting Duxford Imperial War Museum again in June, dressed as Evacuees and experience a ‘practical’ WWII day with many other schools in the county. Pupils will be expected to prepare a talk on a famous WWII character after half term, interview two people who may have or know of experiences during the war. Pupils will also study WWII art
work/posters and discuss wartime propaganda. Films Goodnight Mr. Tom and D.V.Ds will be used to back up classwork. Some wartime baking may happen too!
R.E – Year 6 will be studying Judaism and following through discussion work around Anne Frank’s diary – relating to WWII work. Mrs. Fitzgerald will teach R.E.
Geography – Year 6 are linking WWII work into European Map work – to have an understanding of size, distance and names. Each pupil will be expected to learn their European countries with confidence.
Maths – Mrs Greig will teach Maths. This term Year 6 will be re-visiting a wide range of topics in order to develop and consolidate their understanding in preparation for moving on to senior school. Topics to be covered include ratio and proportion, calculations using the four operations, fractions, decimals and percentages. Much of this will be in the context of solving problems. Pupils will also have an opportunity to address areas they themselves have identified as requiring further study.
Science – Year 6 are studying Biology this term. They are doing the body (heart, respiration and circulation). How to develop investigation skills.
Drug awareness and Health and Sex education will also be covered this term. Mrs Wilkins, Head of Seniors will teach Science.
Sport – Swimming on Fridays up to half term and Games on Thursdays. After half term sport on Mondays and Games on Thursday. PLEASE NOTE SPORTS DAY IS EARLY THIS YEAR - - 8TH June 10 am – for parents who might need to book time off work.
Music – Linking with their study on Musicals all the Juniors are going to London on May 12th to see “The Lion King.” The Year 6 will also be learning some WWII songs.
Art – Taught by Mrs Mazur. This term Year 6 have been looking at the art of Picasso focusing on his Cubist work. They have used a simple piece of lego as their starting point, made a careful observational drawing and have developed this drawing into a large Cubist style colour picture. They are now working on developing this drawing into a 3D piece of work.
ICT is taught by Mrs Saidu-Bala, the Senior School ICT teacher. The pupils are taught every Monday at the Jill Sturdy Centre.
Should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
Kind regards

Year 5 Class Letter
Dear Year 5 parents,
Welcome back to the start of a new term. I am back from maternity leave and am enjoying getting to know the children. Below is a brief outline of the work we are covering this term.
English:
Spellings are given on a Monday and tested on a Friday. Children should practise their spellings daily. In English Writing we are looking at Letters, Points of View and Poetry.
Maths:
This term we will be focusing on methods for multiplication and division, revisiting fractions, decimals and percentages and mental calculation methods. On Fridays, I try to give the students a mathematical investigation which they work on in groups. We are also involved in a Metacognitive Mathematical study with Cambridge University and are implementing their suggestions in our maths lessons.
Science:
This term we are studying Life Cycles of Plants and Animals. We are setting up a number of experiments so small plastic/polystyrene dishes (like those fruit and meat come in) would be very welcome.
ICT:
Year 5 are taught ICT at JSC by Ms Saidu-Bala.
PE:
Year 5 will participate in Games on a Thursday afternoon and swim on Fridays. Next half term they will be at Kelsey Kerridge on Monday afternoons instead of swimming and continue Thursday afternoon PE..
Geography:
This term we are producing our own passports and using these to practise atlas skills and our knowledge of different countries.
History:
We are studying the Victorians and their lifestyles.
Art:
This term Art will focus on Containers. This topic culminates in students’ designing and producing their own.
RE:
We are focusing on the Bible including the Old and New Testament.
Music:
The children will continue to be taught Music by Miss Atter this term and we are very excited about our trip to the Lion King next week.
French and Spanish:
Year 5 will be taught French and Spanish by specialist teachers.
Please encourage your children to read at home as much as possible. If you have any questions or would like to speak to me, my door is always open and I can be contacted during school hours through the office. I make good use of the students’ diaries so please check them daily and sign at the end of each week.
Best wishes for the term.

Year 3 Summer News
Dear Parents,
Now that I have recovered from jet lag, I thought I would let you know what I aim to teach your lovely children this term!
English: I shall continue with differentiated spelling and dictation tests every Friday.
To reinforce spelling strategies, I shall be introducing proof reading exercises.
Comprehension and Grammar lessons will continue with paragraphing, prefixes and suffixes introduced. The pupils will have to prepare another talk. This term the title will be “My Pet” or “My Hobbies”. I have taken on board your comments re reading and have timetabled silent reading, which I shall monitor closely, for four days each week.
We shall be reading fables, legends and the Viking Sagas about their Gods.
The legends and Sagas link in with our History and RE studies.
Maths: The number work, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, will be reinforced as they learn to apply their knowledge to problem solving. I plan to introduce mental arithmetic tests as well as continuing with the times tables sheets. I shall focus on money and time as well as revisiting shapes, fractions and measuring.
History: The Vikings arrived on these shores and we shall study the effects of their invasion.
Geography: We shall be studying a hot wet region, namely a tropical rainforest. Pupils will be also looking at different maps of Cambridge and East Anglia.
Science : Our topic is entitled, “Helping plants grow well”. After half term we will study “Light and Shadow” and hopefully pupils will enjoy some photography, using both colour and black and white film.
Religious Education.: We shall be looking at Anglo Saxon and Viking beliefs.
There will be discussions on faith and does it make a difference.
Art: The pupils will be painting in the style of LS Lowry. They will be investigating patterns and weaving. Using pencil only, they will observe closely and draw objects and plants.
ICT: Pupils will learn to combine graphics and text and improve word processing skills.
I shall endeavour to make the lessons interesting, fun and educational. Should you have any concerns, do not hesitate to come and see me.
Kindest regards
Marian Fitzgerald.
