Sancton Wood vs Cottenham Village College

The frosty reception, the unmoving wall of gloom in shades of grey and blue, the perfected drizzle that seemingly takes great pleasure in your discomfort as it wears away your soul, the unashamed lack of interest in anything that has gone before it... The Sancton Wood seniors football team, on a Monday morning in January.

Composed of some of our finest athletes from years ten and eleven, the Sancton wood team made hard work of the pre match warm up as we awaited the arrival of a familiar foe – Mr Taylor and the Cottenham Village College 'Mean Machine'. The weather wasn't much good either and made even less effort to brighten up the Fenners Sports Arena.

None of that matters, not in the mind of a highly trained schoolboy footballer. From the first whistle the quality of football that followed shone like the sun itself. Sancton Wood took command early on and soon blasted their way to a three – nil lead, the goals coming from Noah Petrovic, Kaan Tyrrell and a stunning strike from the right boot of Stefan Mapp.

Despite the fine efforts of their number eleven the Cottenham side struggled to create any chances, whereas the Sancton Wood team simply could not stop themselves. Two goals from Julian Roberts and one more from Kaan Tyrrell - who could have scored at least another seven but otherwise had a fantastic first thirty five minutes.

Half time score: Sancton Wood 6 – Cottenham Village College 0

Mars bars and flapjack may not be your usual half time fare and it may not have helped much either. Cottenham restarted with a spring in their step and bravely fought their way back into the contest - very nearly scoring at first with a corner and then actually scoring with a glorious strike from their impressive number eleven. Sensing the threat, Sancton Wood ducked and weaved and then landed a few blows of their own. Two goals from the Gerrard-esque Kian Ayhaee and a second goal of the game for the Petrovic-like Noah Petrovic.

In amongst all the premature Sancton Wood celebrations Cottenham Village College scored the second best goal of the game (their first goal being the best). Unmarked and untroubled, the Cottenham player in the number sixteen shirt placed a fine shot into the top corner from all of twenty five yards. And that was that. Rubbish weather. Wonderful football.

A large round of applause and much praise must go to both sets of players for the spirit in which the match was played. Grandstands at the Fenners Sports Arena to be named after Kian Ayhaee for his man of the match performance, Julain Roberts for his flair and creativity, James Yim and Uku Kivisild for their services to determination and industry.

Final score: Santon Wood 9 – Cottenham Village College 2

Sport - Basketball news

November 2011

BOYS U15 BASKETBALL.
On Monday the 5th December Sancton Wood U15 boys basketball team played C.C.S.S U17 Team. Despite the two year age gap the boys performed well. Noah Petrovic our captain and best player worked incredibly hard scoring the majority of the baskets. Stefan Mapp also scored some great lay ups and rebounded confidently, he showed a marked improvement since his last game. Julian Roberts played well creating great space for Noah to drive through with some really fancy skills. Uku Kivisild played well in defense making some great blocks. Man of the match was James Nowshadi for his high work rate and for being a real team player. The boys lost 52-24 a score they should be proud of considering the age difference.

Year 11 - Geography Trip

November 2011

North Norfolk prides itself as the birthplace of a variety of notable personnel - Horatio Nelson, Princess Diana and Stephen Fry are just 3. These and many more, may have strolled along the beach at Sheringham, Salthouse, and maybe Weybourne. But did they ever measure the average pebble size at 10 metre intervals? (See picture) This, along with transecting dunes at Holkham and Holme-next-the-sea was just some of the work we embarked upon on for 2 days in November as part of our Geography GCSE coursework.
First stop was Holme and we studied the ecology of the dunes, then sea defences at Wells-next-the-sea, then Stiffkey Salt marshes, and a finally some complicated glacial scenery at Blakeney. We enjoyed Sheringham youth hostel for the night, and after breakfast headed toward the nearby beach in Sheringham. We gradually followed the Blakeney Point shingle ridge westwards measuring along the way. The afternoon was spent at Holkham in glorious Norfolk sunshine transecting 250 metres of dune landscape. Stray dogs and 10-tonnes worth of soil samples weren't enough to stop us returning to the mini-bus, but instead of a peaceful and luxurious journey home. Mr Parker put his ‘Queen’ tapes on…….. “to keep himself awake” he said. And us!!!

Netball

November 2011

On Friday the 25th of November Sancton Woods Year 6,7 8 and 9 girls played Cambridge Internationals Year 7,8,9 and 10s at netball. Sancton Wood dominated the first quarter due to some excellent defensive play by Tiggie Ellison and Ruby Osman; so for the second we took off some of our stronger players. In the third we then just left on our 6,7 and 8's but due to some excellent distribution of the ball by our center Lizzy Roberts we still dominated although Cambridge International school improved dramatically and started to claw there way back. In the final quarter Sancton Wood went on to win 25 goals to 7. The player of the match was our captain Flossie Roberts who scored many outstanding goals.

I.S.A National Schools Swimming Gala

November 2011

Congratulations to Charlie Fynn and Ella Dunnett who on Saturday 19th of November represented the Eastern Region at the I.S.A National Schools Swimming Gala. This was a huge event and both of our pupils had to swim against talented swimmers from all over the country. Both Ella and Charlie swam well, but in particularly Charlie who came away with a bronze and silver medal for the breaststroke and relay. In eight years of participating in this competion Charlie is only the second Sancton Wood child to come away with a medal. It was a fantastic achievement.
