Helping Young People Thrive: Understanding ‘Languishing’

At Sancton Wood, our commitment to wellbeing goes far beyond reacting to crises. We pay close attention to the quieter signals children give us — the subtle shifts in energy, engagement and confidence that can tell us a great deal about their inner world.

In a recent note to families, Principal Richard Settle reflected on the term “languishing”, coined by psychologist Adam Grant to describe a state that sits between thriving and struggling. It’s a feeling of going through the motions — not unwell, but not fully engaged either.

It’s something we are seeing more frequently in young people across the country, and it reinforces why our holistic approach matters so deeply.

How Sancton Wood Actively Supports Engagement and Wellbeing

We intentionally create opportunities for students to rediscover joy, curiosity and purpose:

  • Duke of Edinburgh expeditions
  • Year 9 residentials
  • Thriving Minds events
  • Weekly Celebration assemblies
  • The Mind Your Head PSHE programme
  • Enrichment sessions for Prep and Senior pupils

These aren’t extras — they’re fundamental to who we are as a school. When young people find “flow” through meaningful activities, they don’t just feel happier; they build resilience, motivation and confidence.

“When children lose track of time because they’re immersed in something they love, they aren’t just engaged — they’re growing.”

— Richard Settle

We will continue to champion every child’s wellbeing with care, insight and genuine partnership with families.
