Turning Blue Monday into a Moment of Connection and Kindness

Students at a Gratitude Wall

For many years, the phrase Blue Monday has been used to describe what is often called the gloomiest day of the year. While the idea itself may be rooted more in popular culture than science, it does reflect something many of us recognise — that this time of year can feel a little flat. The festive season has passed, routines are back in full swing, and winter days can feel long and tiring.

For parents, this can mean juggling work, family life, and the demands of a busy term. For pupils, it may show up as tiredness, dips in motivation, or feeling a little low. These responses are entirely normal — but they are also worth noticing and talking about.

This year at Sancton Wood, we’re choosing to turn Blue Monday into something positive. Across the school, pupils and staff will be encouraged to “play it forward” through small acts of kindness and moments of gratitude.

In the Senior School, students and staff will create a thankfulness wall during breaktime, sharing positive messages and things they are grateful for on post-it notes. An upbeat, feel-good playlist will be playing in the Senior School entrance and Prep playground, helping to lift the mood as the day begins.

In our Nursery, the morning will start with a garden party in the playground at drop-off, creating a joyful and welcoming moment for our youngest children and their families. Tutors across the school will also share simple wellbeing tips, encouraging pupils to reflect on what helps them feel good — and how they can brighten someone else’s day.

We’re also mindful of Brew Monday, an initiative from Samaritans that highlights the power of connection over a cup of tea and a chat. It’s a timely reminder that sometimes the simplest things — a conversation, a shared moment, a kind word — can make a meaningful difference.

While this initiative is light-hearted, it reflects something deeper about life at Sancton Wood. We are a small, wellbeing-centred community where pastoral care sits at the heart of everything we do. Our size allows us to know our pupils well and to keep a close eye on how they are feeling — not just on Blue Monday, but every day.

If you ever have concerns about your child’s mood or wellbeing, please reach out. We’re here to listen, support, and help.

And why not join in at home? Put the kettle on, share a chat, and perhaps play a feel-good track or two. Together, we can turn Blue Monday into something brighter.
