As part of our carefully designed transition programme to the Senior School, our Y6 pupils recently took part in an inspiring Mandarin calligraphy workshop alongside Y 7 students. The event offered a wonderful opportunity for the younger pupils to experience Senior School learning in a creative and collaborative environment.
The workshop began with a fascinating introduction to the ancient origins of Chinese calligraphy, tracing its roots back to the Shang Dynasty (1600–1046 BCE). Pupils learned how early Chinese characters were inscribed on animal bones and turtle shells for purposes such as record-keeping and divination — a captivating glimpse into early Chinese civilisation.
Next, students were introduced to the traditional tools and brush techniques used in Chinese calligraphy. With guidance from their older peers, they practised the eight fundamental brushstrokes that form the basis of Chinese characters. For many, it was a first encounter with this beautiful art form, and the focus and care taken by all was impressive.
The session concluded with a collaborative art piece: a stunning calligraphy bunting displaying the Mandarin characters for love, wealth, health, wisdom, courage, and peace. This meaningful creation now hangs proudly in the classroom as a symbol of both the pupils’ artistic achievement and their journey ahead.
This special keepsake will accompany the Year 6 students as they transition to the Senior School in September — a lasting reminder of shared learning, cultural exploration, and the exciting new chapter to come.
