Why Attendance Matters — And How Sancton Wood Supports Families

Good attendance is strongly linked to academic progress, confidence and future opportunity. However, at Sancton Wood, we know that the story behind a child’s attendance is often far more complex than statistics can show.

In a recent message to families, Principal Richard Settle highlighted research shared by the Department for Education:

Students in Year 11 who miss 10% or more of school time are 50% less likely to achieve a grade 5 in GCSE English and maths.

These figures matter — and they remind us why consistent attendance is so important.

Balancing High Expectations with Deep Pastoral Care

Sancton Wood is, first and foremost, a nurturing school. We fully understand that mental health challenges, family circumstances or individual needs can impact attendance. When a child is on an agreed reduced schedule, they receive our full support and understanding.

At the same time, some students may simply need a little encouragement: a warm reminder, a supportive conversation, or a gentle push to reconnect with peers and learning.

Working Together to Help Students Thrive

We actively monitor attendance, communicate openly with families and offer support where it’s needed. Parents can check attendance at any time through the My School Portal.

“We are here to work in partnership with families. Together, we can find solutions that support both wellbeing and progress.”

— Richard Settle

We’re grateful for the commitment of our community and will continue to walk alongside families every step of the way.
