As part of our inspirational speakers’ programme, Hetty Mahlich, London based Fashion
Editor, Writer and Brand consultant visited our senior school. Hetty spoke to all the
students in the school about the opportunities within the fashion industry and what the
day of a fashion editor may look like.
Hetty works with Nick Knight (one of the most renowned fashion photographers) and his
company, SHOWstudio, as their Editor in Chief. Hetty’s role entails her being a
writer/journalist, creating projecstylist on shoots, and a producer (liaising with and
managing creative teams around specific projects). In her role as
fashion editor, she visits fashion shows around the globe, reporting on the collections,
and interviews designers for SHOWstudio.com.
The students were impressed to hear of the recent work Hetty and her company had
undertaken with one of the original supermodels, Naomi Campbell. Also, behind the
scenes video shoots of Billie Eilish held the students’ attention. Perhaps the most
relevant to today’s audience was SHOWstudio’s collaboration eBay and Lara McGrath
(@thegoatdancer) which celebrated transforming second hand clothing into high fashion
looks.
Hetty spoke a little about her own educational route and delivered information on the
array of career opportunities that exist within the fashion and textile industry. It was
encouraging to hear a person with innate humility stating that it was not always
gregarious and supremely confident individuals that succeed in the world of fashion.
The GCSE students who are studying textiles were delighted to meet with Hetty and
she has already helped a few of them with their own research projects. Some of our
most creative younger students also spoke with Hetty about how to enter the industry
and find relevant internships.
