Fashion Editor Hetty Mahlich Inspires Senior Students at Sancton Wood

As part of our ongoing Inspirational Speakers Programme, we were delighted to welcome Hetty Mahlich, London-based Fashion Editor, Writer and Brand Consultant, to our Senior School. Hetty delivered an engaging talk to the entire student body, offering a rare glimpse into the diverse and fast-moving world of fashion.

Insights from the Editor-in-Chief of SHOWstudio

Hetty works alongside legendary fashion photographer Nick Knight as Editor-in-Chief of SHOWstudio, one of the industry’s most pioneering creative platforms. Her work spans a remarkable range of disciplines — from journalism and editorial direction to creative production and shoot styling.

Students were captivated as she described:

  • What a day in the life of a fashion editor really looks like
  • The collaborative process behind major projects
  • How global fashion shows are covered and critiqued
  • Her interviews with some of the most influential designers working today

Real-World Creative Inspiration

The students were especially excited to hear about recent SHOWstudio projects, including:

  • Work with Naomi Campbell, one of fashion’s original supermodels
  • Behind-the-scenes film work featuring Billie Eilish
  • A sustainability-focused collaboration with eBay and influencer Lara McGrath (@thegoatdancer), showcasing how second-hand clothing can be transformed into high-fashion looks

These examples brought the industry to life and showed students how creativity, technology and purpose now intersect in modern fashion.

Supporting Future Pathways in Fashion and Textiles

Hetty also shared her own educational journey, reassuring students that success in fashion isn’t reserved for the loudest voices or the most confident personalities. Passion, curiosity and commitment can be just as powerful.

Our GCSE Textiles students were thrilled to meet Hetty in person, and several have already received guidance for their coursework research. Younger pupils with an interest in creative careers also enjoyed discussing internships, networking and entry routes into the industry.

Opening Doors to the World Beyond the Classroom

At Sancton Wood, we know that exposure to real-world expertise helps students imagine futures they may never have considered. Talks like this deepen understanding, spark ambition and help each child design their own unique journey.

We’re grateful to Hetty for sharing her time, insight and warmth — and we look forward to welcoming more inspiring guests throughout the year.
